PREPARATIONS FOR THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INTERNATIONAL MONARCH MONITORING BLITZ
From February 18 to 21 2026, we attended an international workshop in Montreal, Canada, at the Montreal Botanical Garden, in the Montreal Insectarium. The meeting was part of the preparations for the 10th anniversary of the Monarch Blitz, a trinational initiative that helps document what happens with monarch butterflies during their summer breeding season.
Scientists and communication specialists from Canada, the United States, and Mexico participated in this meeting. Together, we worked in two groups to review the information collected during nine years of monitoring and to design a trinational communication strategy.
During the workshop, we reviewed the scientific results of the Blitz and discussed ways to encourage more people to participate. The goal is to motivate citizens in the three countries to observe and record monarch butterflies during the summer.
Representing PROFAUNA A.C. and the Correo Real Program, Jerónimo Chávez and Alejandra Zamarripa participated in the sessions and contributed to strengthening the collaboration with partner organizations and institutions.
We are excited about the progress made during these days of work and we hope that the next edition of the Blitz will become an important event that helps strengthen citizen science and international collaboration to protect the monarch butterfly.
We hope the 10th anniversary of the Monarch Blitz reflect a strong trinational collaboration, where science, communication, and citizens join efforts across Canada, the United States, and Mexico to strengthen the conservation of the monarch butterfly.
